Researchers have recently determined that ten foods account for nearly half of all heart disease deaths in the United States. I’m not talking about 10 foods that you’ll want to avoid, but instead, six that help keep your heart healthy and four that may have the opposite effect (if you overdo it).
It’s not just your heart either . . . these ten foods will impact your chances of having a stroke or developing type 2 diabetes. Moderation is key, so keep that in mind as you look over these lists.
Researchers from Tufts Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy found that if people consumed less salt and red meat, while eating more nuts, fruits and vegetables, they could greatly lower their risk of heart disease. This was determined by a large study that tracked the diets of 16,000 people from 1992 to 2012. It was from this study that the above lists were developed.
In a 2012 report that you can find in the Journal of the American Medical Association, the researchers determined that an estimated 45% of deaths from heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes were associated with “sub-optimal intakes of the 10 dietary factors.”
By their calculations, eating too much sodium (more than 2,300 mg a day) accounted for 9.5 percent of the deaths. Here’s a startling fact … according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 90% of American consume too much salt.
